The power of silence and self-expression goes far beyond what meets the eye. Little did I know that my yoga practice back in 2010 would eventually lead me to discover the profound connection between boxing and deep meditation. Eight years later, I stumbled upon an unconventional way to meditate – through getting tattooed. Despite not knowing about it at an early age, my heavily tattooed body has left limited space for the buzzing tattoo machine.
Sitting in the tattoo chair, there were two options: I could either tense up and allow the experience to be a painful one, or I could tap into a calm space and connect energetically with the artist. Initially, I received only one piece of advice: “don’t move.” However, over the years, I realized that getting tattooed possesses a deep ancestral healing quality. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet several tattoo artists whom I trust, and as I relax into the art of getting tattooed, I become more attuned to controlling my breathing.
Continuing this exploratory conversation, I began to find comfort in thriving while being uncomfortable. Recently, I once again adorned my throat with tiny dots, symbols that represent healing and were inspired by a song I wrote back in 2012. Trusting a close friend as they embellished this area connected me to different energies simultaneously. Taking a deep breath as the tattoo machine approached my ear, I found myself thinking, “If I can do this, I can do anything.”
In 2018, I walked into a boxing gym after a phone call with a stranger who immediately felt like a kindred spirit. Grateful for showing up to something uncertain and potentially outside my comfort zone, I was drawn to the sport of boxing. Deep meditation and movement had inspired me to learn a sport that evoked the same sense of presence I experienced during my tattoo sessions. If you’ve never tried boxing or struggle to stay in the present moment, I highly recommend giving it a shot.
As I wrapped my hands and donned the gloves, learning combinations and refining my footwork on the heavy bag, I felt an irresistible surge of joy. I was immediately hooked, and that initial class propelled me into the present moment. Just as my tattoo practice had transformed into a meditation practice, boxing became a spiritual journey. Little did I know that I would fall in love with the sport, become a coach, and devote my days to teaching others the art of boxing.
Unpredicted paths can lead to incredible outcomes if we dare to try something new. That is the lesson I’ve learned over the years – to drive forward, write down aspirations, and speak them into the universe. We must have faith that the universe will conspire to deliver what we desire. If you had told me two years ago that I would be running a boxing gym, working with nutrition and health clients, supporting recovery centers, and continuing my education, I would never have believed you. Opening ourselves to new experiences, unfamiliar languages, and unknown vocabularies brings a sense of change and adventure to our lives.
This year marks my 25th year of healing, a journey that saw significant shifts after a year of abstaining from alcohol and actively seeking experiences that pushed my boundaries. These micro challenges led to profound breakthroughs and forever changed my life. Additionally, I cannot underestimate the healing power and support one can find in having a pet. My 13-year-old dog has journeyed alongside me, becoming a loyal companion who has traveled across the country sharing in my adventures.
Reflecting on my personal experience, I have discovered that finding peace and calm can manifest in various forms. It may require stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing the unknown. Sometimes, we must try something completely new and unfamiliar, allowing it to inspire us and potentially lead our lives in unexpected directions.
If there is one piece of advice I can offer, it is this: if you desire a life full of meaning and adventure, don’t shy away from challenges. Embrace change, follow your instincts, and be open to trying something new. It can be a catalyst for personal growth, transforming your mindset and motivation in ways you never thought possible.
So, write down your dreams, speak them into existence, and believe that the universe will conspire to make them a reality. Be willing to push yourself beyond your limits, for it is there that true growth lies.
